It is Hot!! A little swell in the ocean right now so we decided to stay inside. We caught two nice Triple Tail. One was caught by Brian and it went 10lb. and Jimmy got the second fish that was about 8lb. I missed my shot.  Good quick day. A lot of  fun. Man is that triple Tail tasty.  The moon is getting pretty full.

First off, I hope everyone had a Happy Easter! I fished a lot over the weekend, in fact Easter was the only day that I did not fish,  just a chill day on the beach. Well that was enough for me to go looking for Cobia.  The weather has been beautiful, calm and sunny for days. The water temp. is coming up quick and it is about 70 to 71 degrees along the beaches around Sebastian. We launched the boat at the Inlet Marina. We headed out towards Bethel, there was bait on the buoy but they wouldn’t hit a sabiki.  We went off and fished the ledge for the morning. Not much action, we fished a few spots and had two Cobia swim to the boat. Jared hooked one up and lost it twice. It was close to being a keeper. They swam off as quick as they came up to the boat.

It was 1 p.m. and we decided to head in and start looking around. We got on the other side of the shoal and we had some luck. First, we ran across a floating buoy ball and there was a small Triple Tail under it. I casted a jig with a shrimp and let it sink. The Triple Tail went for it and it was fish on! I landed the fish and it 15 inches, barely a keeper so I safely released it back. Second, we ran into some manta rays swimming on the surface. We both made a few casts on it. Jared hooked up and landed  a 20 pound Cobia.  Jared landed the next Cobia, which was a little smaller at 18 pounds. While he was hooked up with his fish, I lost a 40 lb approx. We moved on with our two fish and came across a set of two rays that had one fatty on it.  After several attempts on it, Jared finally got the fish to bite.  He fought it for awhile and landed it, it was 31 pounds. With Three fish in the box, we continued our search for the final fourth. I was up on my perch and was spotting and noticed a free swimmer. It was a nice fish. Jared spotted it as well and positioned me for a cast. I missed the first and figured I only had one more shot before Quick Draw Mcdraw Jared  took a cast. It was a perfect shot five feet out in front. I jigged it once and it was on!!! This was a good fish. Man I couldn’t believe it what a blast, a good fight.  Jared gaffed it and was biggest yet. It weighed 401/2 lbs. Good enough for first place in the Whitey’s tournament, so far. There is still a lot of April left.

My Mom was in town for my B-day. I wanted to take her fishing out of the Port. We stopped and picked up some live Shrimp on the drive up. The weather was perfect and the fish should start showing up now that is warming up. We fished a few buoys on the way out. I decided to go north and look for some free swimmers. About five minutes later, I spotted a nice Triple Tail and circled around to see if I could get a shot. I made the cast and hooked up the 10lb. fish and handed it to my Mom. The fish jumped a few times and made a few good, hard runs. Moms did a great job of fighting that fish to the boat.

After that we ran everywhere looking for something holding fish. We went north then a good ways to the south. I found out later where the Cobia where. On the way in I went back to were we started and found a little something. Made a cast and hooked up a nice 8lb. Triple Tail. I wish we could of fished it longer, because of the scheduled launch we got told to leave the area from the Coast Guard. I got the spot for next time though. That was a fun day with Moms. Thanks Mom, I love you!

 Friday was a killer day. The weather was perfect. We caught fish and got sunburned in November. Jen and I fished out of the Port Canaveral. We were Triple Tail fishing. The ocean had a little swell with a light chop. We fished every buoy outside the port. No fish on any of the cans. We came across some weed patches. I spotted a board floating and there was a small keeper Trip laying underneath. Jen has never fished for Triple Tail. So I took the cast to show her how its done. That is so fun, I love sight fishing for Trips. I hooked up the fish and landed it. It was just perfect for the table.

We moved on and did not have much luck on the weeds. We checked one more can, Jen tossed a Shrimp out and let it sink. Just a few seconds went by and it was fish on! Jen can fish pretty good she knows what is going on. She just has that natural feeling and instinct of which way to pull a fish. The fish took off on the surface screaming away from the can. I saw right away that it was a nice Cobia. Jen was hooked up with 20lb. Power pro with 30lb. leader lined on a 4000 Shimano Saros. Jen whipped that Cobia down, it came to the boat pretty fast for that big of a fish. I wasn’t sure if I should stick it with the gaff so quick. It had to be green still? The fish was just laying there though and was begging for the gaff. I  went for it and stuck it and the Cobia went crazy. It was tricky getting it over the gunnel. Jen’s first Cobia. A nice one, 40lbs.+. what a great day! Love you Jen.

Tom is from Virginia. Tom wanted to fish a half day. He was just wanting to catch some dinner. The pressure was on. What to do inshore? I figured that we would start off catching bait. Pins were a little hard to catch, but we finished with 2 dozen. The water in the river is crystal clear right now. The tide is low at 11 a.m. The weather is calm and sunny. We headed towards Wabasso and fished the reef for a little. Tom caught a keeper Mangrove Snapper. It was slow so I decided to run a little out and see if we could maybe find a Ray or some weeds for a possible Tripletail.

The ocean was clean I couldn’t find much weed. On the way back to the Inlet We came across a small line of weed. It wasn’t long and we spotted a few Trips. There were 2 or 3 fish and they were small. I kept moving and spotted another Trip worth catching. I set Tom in position for a cast. It took a few casts and then Tom hooked up his first Tripletail. It was exciting, you have to really put the cast on the money in order for success. We landed the first one and it was a keeper. We kept searching and came across another and Tom hooked this one with his first cast, another keeper. We spotted 2 fish over 10lbs. but couldn’t get a cast off in time. Next were 2 fish sitting under the weed. One was good size and the other was small. I threw first in order to let Tom try for the big one. I hooked up the small one but the bigger one spooked. The fish was just keeper size. We looked a little more and had no more luck. We decided to call it good and headed towards Capt. Hiram’s to fillet the catch. The weather was perfect calm, warm, and sunny. Reports were that the Tripletail are around. I offered to take a few good friends on mine up to the Port Canaveral and check it out. Its been awhile since I have been up there. I know it petty good, I use to catch a lot of fish there before 9-11. Well now they have opened the area up known as the bite.

We arrived at 9 a.m. and made our way out with a few dozen live Shrimp. We fished a few buoys and made our way out and came across some huge patches of weed. We searched for awhile and saw a few small Trips and 2 that were over 20lbs. We spooked both and I did manage to hook up a Trip that was around 10lbs. but it threw the hook half way through the fight.

It was getting to be afternoon and we were starting to wonder what was up with the lack of fish. We searched a bit more and started to make our way back in. I would never of guessed what was about to happen. Well I would of but I was not expecting it this soon in the year. We ran over 2 Rays and I saw a fish on 1. I quickly turned and spotted the Rays they were straight down. I dropped a big Shrimp down and hooked up with a nice Cobia. It wasn’t long until I lost it. That was o.k. because there were rays everywhere we looked. It didn’t take long and I hooked up another Cobia. This one we landed it was about 36 inches. We searched a bit more and Nick was next to get a fat Cobia. We landed that one was a little bigger than the first. I hooked up again next with a fatty a little over 40lbs. That was awesome what a bite that was. We ended with 6 Cobia. What a day ! That was a lot of fun.
