The weather has been HOT! The winds were calm and the only breeze was when we were running. Gary being from N.Y. was struggling a bit with the heat. The bait was thick on the beach. Greenies and Sardines still holding strong. We fished for about an hour along the beach and no luck. In 55ft. there were some schools of blue runners on the surface. We trolled a few lives. Gary caught 3 or 4 nice Kingfish. We lost a big one close to 50lbs. It skyrocketed on a bait and we were hooked up! About 2 runs in to the fight the fish broke my rig. #4 wire. It was a big fish! We bottomed dropped in 90 and caught few Seabass and a decent dolphin, about 7 or 8lbs. There were two nice size Cobia that swam up to the boat, they wouldn’t eat a thing. On the way back in we played with a few more kings and called it a day. Thanks again Gary it was a pleasure fishing and getting to know you. Hope your keys trip went well!!!

The weather was perfect. Light west wind. Seas 1-2ft. We headed out from the Inlet Marina at 7 a.m. The tide was incoming in Sebastian Inlet on the way out. Threadfins and Spanish Sardines are on the beaches near the inlet. We picked a few up and headed to the north. We fished a few spots in 60ft. and caught a Cobia that was just short and a few Seabass. While we were running around we came across some schools of BIG JACKS!!! Jason and Justin each caught a one. Biggest was Justin 28lbs. and other was Jason 21lbs. I didn’t think that big one was ever gonna stop running. We also caught some Spanish Mackerel that were in a feeding frenzy.

We headed out to the 90ft. stuff and moved around a few times catching seabass. There was no current and we were just drifting. On the last spot we got into the Red Snapper. I wish we could of kept them. Jason and Justin ended up catching 6 and we left them biting. Only one getting a fresh Snapper dinner today is the big Bull shark that came up and fed on one of Justin’s fish. That is always kind of cool to see. Well that was a great day of fishing, lots of action. Thanks again Jason and Justin for both trips. I’ll see you in a month ,maybe?

I fished a lot over the weekend, in fact Easter was the only day that I did not fish, just a chill day on the beach. Well that was enough for me to go looking for Cobia. The weather has been beautiful, calm and sunny for days. The water temp. is coming up quick and it is about 70 to 71 degrees along the beaches around Sebastian. We launched the boat at the Inlet Marina. We headed out towards Bethel, there was bait on the buoy but they wouldn’t hit a sabiki. We went off and fished the ledge for the morning. Not much action, we fished a few spots and had two Cobia swim to the boat. Jared hooked one up and lost it twice. It was close to being a keeper. They swam off as quick as they came up to the boat.

It was 1 p.m. and we decided to head in and start looking around. We got on the other side of the shoal and we had some luck. First, we ran across a floating buoy ball and there was a small Triple Tail under it. I casted a jig with a shrimp and let it sink. The Triple Tail went for it and it was fish on! I landed the fish and it 15 inches, barely a keeper so I safely released it back. Second, we ran into some manta rays swimming on the surface. We both made a few casts on it. Jared hooked up and landed a 20 pound Cobia. Jared landed the next Cobia, which was a little smaller at 18 pounds. While he was hooked up with his fish, I lost a 40 lb approx. We moved on with our two fish and came across a set of two rays that had one fatty on it. After several attempts on it, Jared finally got the fish to bite. He fought it for awhile and landed it, it was 31 pounds. With Three fish in the box, we continued our search for the final fourth. I was up on my perch and was spotting and noticed a free swimmer. It was a nice fish. Jared spotted it as well and positioned me for a cast. I missed the first and figured I only had one more shot before Quick Draw Mcdraw Jared took a cast. It was a perfect shot five feet out in front. I jigged it once and it was on!!! This was a good fish. Man I couldn’t believe it what a blast, a good fight. Jared gaffed it and was biggest yet. It weighed 401/2 lbs. Good enough for first place in the Whitey’s tournament, so far. There is still a lot of April left.

Another great day of weather. In the morning there was no winds and the ocean was a lake. First thing we went and cast netted some bait (pins and butters), then we ran straight out to Bethel Buoy. On the way we came across a big school of bait. Mostly Sardines with a few thread-fins mixed in. We skipped the buoy and went to the ledge. Eric was free-lining a Sardine and hooked up first with a nice Cobia. I got to give it the gaff. I think that is my favorite moment when fishing. It was near 23lbs. We fished the bottom for a couple of hours, catching Sea-Bass, a couple of Gag Grouper, two decent Mangrove Snappers, a Mutton Snapper, a big Trigger, and a few Kingfish. We did search for more Cobia and never were able to spot any. The winds picked up a bit out of the S.E. and it was getting late, so we headed in. It was a lot of fun and a great day of fishing.

With Cobia on the brain, Eric and I decided to run offshore and give it a try. We set out S.E. towards Bethel Shoals. Seas were 2ft. and a little choppy on the way out. There was a little bait on the buoy but they were not biting a sabiki. Next stop was a spot on the ledge. There was Kings skying on bait pods. We started casting anything and everything and were hooking Kings one after the other. I was catching them on a 4000 with 10lb. braid. We quickly limited out with our 4 fish. We fished the bottom for awhile catching Seabass and even a nice yellow tail Snapper. I had a Cobia hooked up and lost it, thats when it swam over and ate Eric’s Jig. Then he had the pleasure of loosing it. It was maybe a keeper. The winds laid down and the sun came out. It made for a great ride home.

The weather straightened out just enough to get offshore for a day. Jose and George live in Orlando. With all of the cold weather that we have had, the Grouper and Snapper seasons are in effect now and they are both closed. We had a huge fish kill in the river because of the freezing temps. I was unsure what we would even fish for. I decide that we would start off fishing some 60ft. stuff. The surface temp was 64. They both were catching Sea Bass left and right. Most of them were just shy of being keepers. We moved around and fished 3 or 4 spots and it was all the same action. George did catch a Red grouper that was around 20″. It was just rough enough that I did not feel comfortable going farther out to the 90ft stuff. It was getting time to go in as well. The weather did end up laying down nicely on our way in. The next, Wednesday was really nice and heard of a few rays with Cobia on them popping up. Thanks again Jose and George.

Pete & Sean (trip #2)

The weather was clear and the wind was light from the south west. We headed out of Hiram’s around 7 a.m. to fish offshore. We first went to Bethel buoy to get our bait. Well bait was difficult to catch, but we managed to get a few and plus we still had a few dozen pinfish left from last night. The Dolphin fishing has been a little slow so we decided to stick with the bottom.

Well fishing was slow, The winds shifted more from the south and the current picked up a little. With a live Sarine on a flat line, Pete hooked up and landed a 10 lb. king. We kept fishing and managed to get a few more fish a short grouper, some decent SeaBass, another king, and we lost a few as well.

Fishing was a little slow but overall it still was a good positive attitude adjustment. Pete and Sean were a lot of fun to go fishing with. Thanks guys !

Greg, Dave, and Greg Jr. We headed to get bait, with the moon still full the bait was impossible to catch. we managed to get a dozen and decided to go use them. We were bottom fishing in 90ft. when a school of small dolphin came up to the boat. I quickly got a live bait out on a free-line. They wouldn’t hit so I cut a couple of baits into chunks and started to chum. It didn’t take long and they were feeding. Greg ended up with the biggest fish which was close to 10lbs. We caught 6 and decided that was enough for a few dinners. Dave caught a small kingfish. We ran out of bait and decided to call it a half day. Thanks guys, I look forward to fishing with you again.
