Brian and I

40lb. Cobia 3-01-08 Cobia fishing out of Port Canaveral. We left the dock around 9a.m. The reports were that the Rays were in 55ft. of water straight out. Well lets just say you couldn’t miss the boats. We found a two Rays right off and neither had fish on them. On the third ray that we spotted it looked like that there was nothing on it. Out of the blue a nice Cobia swam right up to the boat. I was holding my rod and just flipped the switch and let my Thunder bait buck tail drop, jigged it once and let it drop again. The Cobia inhaled and I just let it run before set the hook. Fish ON! We landed it and it was approx. 40lbs. There was a lot of rays and a lot of boats. To much pressure, we saw one other fish and we couldn’t get it to hit. At least we caught one nice fish.

Matson and I

Capt. Eric Metcalf Fat Cobia What a nice day. The day started with me sleeping in and getting a late start. That was the plan though. The weather was perfect. I picked up Matson at Hiram’s and we made our way through the inlet shortly after 1 p.m. We headed a little North and instantly came across a big Manta Ray.

The first Ray didn’t have a Cobia but the next ray did. It was a nice fish 40 lbs. I caught that one. What a fight, I caught it on my Calcutta 400 with 15lb. line and a Thunder Bait pink head 1 1/2 oz. bucktail. That fish Ran at the boat full speed 3 times. Not to mention the fact that I had a back lash in the reel. I still cant believe I landed that fish. After a few Pics we moved on and found the net victim. Matson caught a smaller keeper about 20lbs. I lost one more fish that was 40 lb. range that was quite the the site, It was on the top of the ray and the ray spooked. The line ended up breaking. It all happed so fast. Well it was time to go. Its gonna be a good Cobia season!!!

Murph, Melissa, and Nick

Attitude Adjustment The weather was perfect calm, warm, and sunny. Reports were that the Tripletail are around. I offered to take a few good friends on mine up to the Port Canaveral and check it out. Its been awhile since I have been up there. I know it petty good, I use to catch a lot of fish there before 9-11. Well now they have opened the area up known as the bite.

We arrived at 9 a.m. and made our way out with a few dozen live Shrimp. We fished a few buoys and made our way out and came across some huge patches of weed. We searched for awhile and saw a few small Trips and 2 that were over 20lbs. We spooked both and I did manage to hook up a Trip that was around 10lbs. but it threw the hook half way through the fight.

It was getting to be afternoon and we were starting to wonder what was up with the lack of fish. We searched a bit more and started to make our way back in. I would never of guessed what was about to happen. Well I would of but I was not expecting it this soon in the year. We ran over 2 Rays and I saw a fish on 1. I quickly turned and spotted the Rays they were straight down. I dropped a big Shrimp down and hooked up with a nice Cobia. It wasn’t long until I lost it. That was o.k. because there were rays everywhere we looked. It didn’t take long and I hooked up another Cobia. This one we landed it was about 36 inches. We searched a bit more and Nick was next to get a fat Cobia. We landed that one was a little bigger than the first. I hooked up again next with a fatty a little over 40lbs. That was awesome what a bite that was. We ended with 6 Cobia. What a day ! That was a lot of fun.

Tiffany and Me

Tiffs dolphn The weather was nice, the wind was a 10 mph. out of the south. The Ocean had a little chop, it wasn’t bad enough to cancel. Its Sunday and I am going fishing, Thats a new one for me. Tiffany was coming and I was wanting to put her on some fish.

We went to Bethel to get bait, The bait was there but it was tricky. We got our few dozen and headed out. The winds were letting off and the sun was shining. I was wanting to slow troll some live one’s. We Had three lines out and were moving along when Tiffany says, Hey Eric whats that behind the engine? Well, that would be a Cobia. I Quickly grabbed the rod with a bucktail and tossed it back. It was 33″, just big enough for the grill. Good eyes Tiffany!

We kept fishing and fishing. It was slow. We caught a small king, a big Barracuda, and Tiffany got a Dolphin big enough for the box. She pitched a live bait and the fish slammed it. Good job Tiff. Well we decided to call it and head in. Thanks Tiff for coming fishing and putting up with me.
